Casualty

[Poll #957118]

ETA: Five times for me, starting with a cracked collar-bone when I was three, and ending with my intussusception when I was thirty-six.

[identity profile] enismirdal.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Two times when I was the casualty and one other time when someone else was.

On one occasion I was about 2, so don't remember it.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember my first trip, when I was three; but I do remember the fall from a tree that necessitated it.

Now that explains a LOT.

Did you mean as a casualty, accompanying a casualty, or both?

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant as a casualty, but didn't say so! I would prefer answers to the question I meant; but answers to the question I asked would be acceptable.

Ah so that's what the problem has been.

Damn my psi powers fail me again! Though now I come to think of it I have been twice for me, I forgot about when I was badly scalded aged 3, the other time was for a very bad burn to my hand. I hope I never have to go again, either for myself or with someone else :-(

[identity profile] orkney-rob.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not been too often - once for splitting my tibia right up the middle whilst fell running, not noticing... and doing a few night excercises around Warcop training ground ;-) Aaah - fun no!

Then there was the time I dropped a freshly filled caffatiere of coffee over my bare feet... actually managed third degree burns on that one - and then ignored it for a week or so cos I was due up at Roy Bridge to get very drunk. The doctor types were rather unimpressed!

Most often it is related to impressive unscheduled dismounts whilst mountain biking though! Seperated collar bones, dislocations, concussion... all good fun really.

I've been in an ambulance but someone else was the patient.

[identity profile] the-marquis.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I got knocked off my bike in '91 by a wandering pedestrian whilst coming down Trafalgar St in Brighton (steep), and they fucked off! But the chap in the tailor's called an ambulance and I got an overnight stay to check for concussion. And about 9 years ago when I nicked a finger badly with a mandolin whilst chopping vegetables after meeting Northfarting at the Turf

*Glares at old person* :p and is appalled by the language :p , I would have been like 1 back in '91, and it was me who voted 'I'll have a pint, please', not that I've already had 3 tonight :p

I'm hardly old, Welly is older than me anyway, and I'm never likely to claim to be polite company either :)

[identity profile] sim02468.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at my age we think anyone over the age of about 30 is old :p , and when they get to 45 we're surprised they're still hanging in there!

Both of my times were foot-related. I really did a number on my right big toe when I was about thirteen, and about three years ago I fractured my right ankle and tore some ligaments.

I've also been the person waiting for someone else in casualty on more than one occasion -- usually, of course, in the middle of the night.

[identity profile] helflaed.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah- I took it as accompanying as well. In my case it would be twice- once with a sprained wrist and once with a pulled shoulder (after tripping on a bit of vacuum cleaner helpfully left on the stairs by my son)

[identity profile] romancinger.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
I took it to mean personally - which was 2 or 3, sprains and the like. I've accompanied other folks quite a lot, though, including the poor chap at Oxonmoot!

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Which one was that? (Not Salesman?)

[identity profile] romancinger.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
No - Salesman didn't need anyone to hold his hand! It was the young German who had food poisoning.
And now I'm off to Stratford, for Ian McKellen and other good company...

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-03-31 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, of course.

Well have fun in Stratford, and say hello to the good company.

Oh, heaps of times. Mostly asthma attacks or falling off bikes, mountains etc.

A few years ago, I was clubbing with a friend and she dislocated her knee and I had to take her to hospital. I then had to ring her mother at 3am to tell her what had happened. *That* was a fun phone call ;-).

Well, I don't count four as lots, but you've given me no other option.

Once when I broke my fourth toe on my right foot when I was 13 on the last day of the summer term at school. Two friends and I were mucking around in the Gym. I went to kick the ball away from one of them and my toes met the sole of his gym shoe. He was a big chap and didn't move, I ended up with a compression fracture. That toe has never bent at the first knuckle since.

The second time was when I rolled my car when I was 25. I wasn't wearing a seat belt because the car didn't have seat belts. I can remember the back end coming round to meet me, but I can't remember anything else until the car landed back on all four wheels on the other side of the road facing the other was. I ended up with three stitches in my scalp. That was also the only time I've ever had any anaesthetic. Jab to the scalp by the injury and I could feel the numbness just spreading out like a fractal. It felt wonderful, not because of the lack of pain, there wasn't much, but it just felt good.

The third time was when I broke my fourth toe on my left foot when I was 26. I was walking round the bed at my parents and stubbed my toe on a heavy chair which was in the bedroom. I collapsed on the bed screaming! I ended up with a second compression fracture. And a second toe what has never bent at the first knuckle since.

The fourth time was very shortly after the third time. I had shingles, though I didn't know that at the time. I was trying to change my doctor and didn't want to go to the previous one, but I wasn't allowed to see the the new one I wanted to see. So I went to casualty instead: they were most helpful and dealt with me very quickly just in case I was infectious. I didn't change to that doctor either.

I've answered the question you asked, though, not the one you meant. I've only been once on my own account (a particularly bad allergic reaction to multiple gnat/mosqito bites in the middle of the night. They gave me piriton ;-) Actually, though, it was quite useful, as I didn't have any on hand, and they gave some helpful advice on how I could take it in emergencies contra to the 'official' leaflet advice.) Most of the other occasions were accompanying/visiting another of your respondants.
