Thanks for your suggestions on this and my previous posting. It does appear that my firewall was conflicting with Firefox in some way.

I have temporarily solved the problem by switching to AVG. In the longer run, I'm going to have a go at getting my money out of CA; but this wil depend on whose patience runs out first, mine or theirs.
