Have you tried the Jasper FForde books? Incidentally if you haven't yet read the Polish Tolkien special form 2005 yet I reccommend the fanfiction at the back "The Dispossessed" is an interestin take on certain brothers.

I tried the first JF book, but didn't get on with it. I have read the Polish special - thanks for the recommendation.
