I occasionally filter my reading list into friends and communities - just so I can quickly see what my friends have been up to without having to scroll past too much community stuff.

I don't use filters for writing any more. I have a policy of not putting it on the internet if its not for the eyes of the general public, these days. Any day LJ could be hacked and locked posts opened to the world...
