Yes, it's another poll; they take less mental effort than serious posts

[Poll #1591148]
Include palmtops, laptops, desktops, micros, minis, mainframes; do not include DVD players, washing machines, or programmable timers for your boiler, no matter how many chips they've got inside them.

I'm assuming that they don't all actually have to work. ;)

Let's see - I have 4 in this room - 2 desktops, 1 laptop, 1 pda. Hubby has 4+ in his room - 3 desktops, 1 laptop in active use, several more desktops and laptops in various states of recent usability (he's room is the laboratory). The son has 2 desktops. I have a PDA in the purse.
This does not include all the intelligent games machines - WII, several DS machines, and the cell phones (none are the fancy new ones).
And the Hysterical, er Historical Collection. Many still working when we last fired them up, but there isn't much use for Zilog, CP/M, Dos, Windoze 3, and older Mac machines.
This is a very computer geeky house in San Jose, CA.

Plus the two that don't work at all, as noted by [livejournal.com profile] inamac The seven she gives include two for the tip.

We need a 10plus button. I am reminded of a conversation overheard at Eastercon several years ago:

How many operating systems do you have?
On me? or back at home?

[identity profile] clarienne.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
2 - one that works and one that doesn't. We recently had a ruthles clear out of several others that didn't work.

[identity profile] segh.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Four that work, two that don't.

For the sake of argument I am including a mostly-complete PC (missing hard drive but I've got plenty spares), and, reluctantly, my mobile (because it has a web browser, not that it's any use as one).

[identity profile] tigerfort.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Another ten-plus here; I think the total is thirteen. OTOH, most of them are in a heap waiting for me to sort them out and find them new homes. There are only three or four that actually get used :)

What about smartphones e.g. Blackberries, iPhones, Androids?
ext_20852: (Default)

[identity profile] alitalf.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you include the iPhone it is 12 and they all work.

[identity profile] philmophlegm.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh - I forgot the Spectrum! I ticked 8 (including my work Blackberry and my work laptop, and bunn's work laptop and two other computers which are actually owned by Clare Associates rather than us personally) but I forgot the Spectrum which would make it 9.

I didn't include a Wii or an XBox 360, although you could possibly make a case for both if you are prepared to accept smartphones.

Of mine, the least pwerful would be the Spectrum and the most powerful would be Annatar, which is an overclocked Core II Duo E8300 with a GeForce 9800GX2, a little over two years old.

I think your next poll should be some measure of power - perhaps a 3DMark score.

[identity profile] philmophlegm.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and they all work with the exception of Orac*, which needs a new PSU.

[livejournal.com profile] philmophlegm has a point, actually; where are the boundaries. There are at least a couple of Psion 3-series around that I didn't include, but which ought to count.

[identity profile] didiusjulianus.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
3 that work and get regular use, 1 that probably does but isn't hooked up (it's a for a niche purpose), enough bits to make another for Youngest (but there isn't much point cos she is not here much and sharing is good for The Teen) and I'm about to buy one.

With 4 at t'other place, that is more than one each for 6 ppl :)
Other people seem to be catching up but we've had several computers for years and years before it became commonplace :D

One that works, one that can limp along and possibly be used in an emergency but has a battery that won't hold a charge without a power cord. Technically, I also have a 10-year-old desktop that's not much better than a brick, and needs to be recycled at the next bulk electronics recycling collection in my hometown.

I sent this reply on my iphone (left handed) while connected to an aphoresis machine that was extracting my platelets for the benefit of the NHS. Thinking on it now, I have three old Psions that I have intended to ebay if I ever have time and energy, and an old Palm pda, so that is 16 in working order.

Technically there is also the one I built for [livejournal.com profile] sally_maria, so until I give it to her, 17.

That's the ones that definitely work - there's most of another one pretending on the desk, just in case someone wants to look at the house, and the BBC B, which may not work now. (Oh, and the iPod Touch, if that counts.)

That would be 8, which isn't bad for a house of three people. On the other hand, 4 of them are mine.

I've said 5, because I don't actually know that any of them don't work, but I haven't tried running the Spectrum 48K (that I used to word-process my university dissertation in 1986) or the Amstrad (that did sterling service for the Cardboard Boxers of Croydon in the '90s) since I moved here and I've only had my previous desktop PC switched on twice or three times since I got the new one. For regular use it is only Queen Clioputer and the beautiful StephanEEE...
