I need cheering up

If you've got a joke, an interesting fact, an amusing / useful website, a book or film to recommend - I'd like to hear it!

Robert Rankin's Brentford books have been making me laugh out loud lately.

Oh yes they're a very good trilogy in 5 parts!

Thanks (although I have heard mixed reviews of him).

The earlier Brentford books are good, the later ones get wierder and very in-jokey so you can't really 'get' a lot of the humour if you haven't already encountered his stuff, this also applies to his later books outside thie series.

Have you tried the Jasper FForde books? Incidentally if you haven't yet read the Polish Tolkien special form 2005 yet I reccommend the fanfiction at the back "The Dispossessed" is an interestin take on certain brothers.

I tried the first JF book, but didn't get on with it. I have read the Polish special - thanks for the recommendation.

There's a possibly-good one-off hour long drama on BBC1 at about 9.10 this evening.

Liza Minelli was on Radio2 yesterday afternoon (Steve Wright?) which might've been quite fun/interesting and it's on Listen Again. Or I could direct you to a website that has an authentic-feeling Java emulation of ZX Spectrum Chuckie Egg on it, that 80s flashback been cheering me up this week.

Did you see the userpic I made for you?

Userpic, what userpic?

A couple of days ago somebody pointed me to this - Shrödinger's Cat Toy, which I thought was amusing.

And you have seen the Dalek Song, haven't you?

Your icon was on NCIS tonight, it's his new job ...

Thanks, I hadn't heard that. I did watch the first season, then I kind of lost track of it.

I'll have to look him up.

See also my journal entry of today. Silly...

Very silly :-) (I had heard it before, but rather forgotten about it).

I'e just finished "Stonehenge" by Bernard Cornwell which is not bad. Although I do prefer his ones that run in series, like the Alfred/Arthur ones.

Thanks for that. I enjoyed the Sharpe books (at least the earlier ones), and read the first of his American Civil War series.

I like to recommend Tim Powers to anyone that'll listen. He writes great fantasy books set in roughly-contemporary America, with lots of Egyptian and card-based divination imagery.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2006-10-01 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for that - I'll give him a go.

Try www.johnadcox.com and read any of his work. (I've recommended him here before.) He has a fantasy trilogy and I think it's all online. If it's not, contact him there and he'll send it to you. You could read the excerpts first. The trilogy is on Adobe Reader. It's not scheduled for publication yet, depending on the success of the single volume Blackthorne Faire that should be out any time now. It'll be a tv series next year.

Thanks for that; I'll give him a try.

Have you read all of [livejournal.com profile] romancinger's work?

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I hven't; but that's a good idea. Thanks.
