I have persuaded my mother to let me cook a hare before Christmas, which I am very pleased about (I've always fancied cooking hare). This is some achievement, due to an Unfortunate Hare Incident, involving, so far as I understand, gallons of blood, in the early years of my parents' marriage. I have sworn only to bring it into the house skinned and jointed.
That does sound unpleasant! Tentacles and suckers, oh my.
I have tried to get more details of the hare, but to no avail. I can only conclude from the horror-struck tones - and the ban - that it was worse than childbed.
We went to a restaurant for my in-laws and foradan to try Norwegian meaty xmas food. They had pinnekjøtt and tallerken (or something like that). I think they actually preferred the latter.
My grandma's taking us to the Bracebridge dinner, which involves 7 courses of I have no idea what (but I imagine includes fish, beef, and other things...haha).
We are apparently doing the Full Polish Thing on Christmas Eve. If I know Full Polish Things, it will consist of Pork, Cabbage, and Potato. Whether we'll be able to manage anything beyond dry toast on Christmas Day is a moot point.
My aunt and uncle do the main dishes on Christmas, and in the past it's usually been a crown roast of pork. But one excellent year it was a rack of beef ribs grilled with an espresso-maple glaze that was almost unholy in its deliciousness, so I always hold out hope that it will make an encore appearance one day.
My mother will be roasting a turkey- I find it rather dry when roasted- turkey is much nicer done in other ways. I have goose for preference, but as Mum's cooking...
See my answer about pudding. I have been and would be happy with a nice roasted turkey, chicken, duck or possibly even lamb, or one of those half-prepared jobbies such as a turkey crown.
My mum was telling me she will be making turkey for foradan and my dad, though. And what exactly we vegetarians are having, she didn't say, though we are the majority in the house...
