Terry Pratchett on Unseen Academicals

"In the nature of things, readers are often moved to suggest 'topics' for my Discword books. This is somewhat depressing, because most people who are not writers fail to understand how writers think, and if it comes to that, so do I."

ETA: "Natalie Portman is set to slay the undead in a movie adaptation of best-seller Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it is reported."

A book about Orc redemption!

I too, when I first read LoTR (at about the same age) was a bit concerned about creatures that were just _automatically_ horrible because of their 'race'.

It can be soothing because you don't have to worry about Orcs because they are SO BAD and just there for the heroes to overcome. A bit like the French in Sharpe...

Shippey has some interesting comments on this, in (I think) Author of the Century.

I'd been a bit off TP, but reading that makes me think I should read Unseen Academicals. :)

I confess I quite enjoy them, in a stereotyped sort of way.

Punch cartoon from ?the 1970s. A publisher is talking to a Regency lady. "I like the plot, Miss Austen, but all this effing and blinding will have to go."

And from a radio comedy series of the ?2000s, set in hell. "And that's Jane Austen, the foul-mouthed hussy."
