Resurrecting the book extract meme

Instructions:
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book on your desk! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

My answer:
"A similar Porter Cake was made here in England, named after the dark smoky taverns and ale houses known as Porter Houses, where it was widely believed 'Porters' drank the dark ale."

The book is "Cakes, Regional and Traditional", by Julie Duff.

Mine's the Paranoia rulebook...and the chosen sentences don't seem particularly amusing out of context, worse luck:

"Revenue stream: Selling news and on-the-scene reports to the vidchannel. Payments for bad-mouthing other service firms. Bribes for covering celebrity-wannabees."

Mine's 'The Lost Road' so you can look that one up yourself!

"I was moved by the oddness and possible misunderstandings between them. It was a moment full of possible outcomes. I had been drawing the sheep a bit and thinking about the old ones, the specially trusting ones and having to kill them when they get too feeble, all of that farming stuff that concentrates the mind."

- Drawing and painting people a fresh approach - Emily Ball.

You have only posted one sentence, but you asked for 3!

The nearest book to me is my thesis, but on p123 there are <5 sentences (yes, you can all stop laughing about clinicians' PhDs right now, it's a page with some graphs on).

"If there are 9 full-time Science teachers then 0.6 of a teacher (=18 periods in a 30-period cycle will be timetabled out of a laboratory. Some other curriculum equations are shown in Appendix 4. For example: p<0.85RW."

-Timetabling, K. Johnson

This will be quite long

"He was dismissive in advance, asking whether his fellow delegates would behave like 'squabbling little millennial sects who imagine they have outrun all their contemporaries because they have transferred their old vague vision of the Kingdom of Heaven from the clouds to the earth, with a little rudimentary Liberalism thrown in by way of "palliative" political flavouring' or like 'a serious practical Democratic and Collectivist movement in politics and public opinion.' The Fabian Society had prepared a 'Report on Fabian Policy and Resolutions Presented by the Fabians Society to the International Socialist Workers' and Trade Unions' Congress', which was subsequently republished as the seventieth Fabian tract. But it did not receive much attention."
