Randomness

The lake at work is still frozen over ... only now it has a thin layer of water on top of the ice. You can see gulls apparently walking on water.

The taxi driver drew my attention to a car with Russian plates earlier today. He then spotted that it was right hand drive.

I wish I had a taxi firm's clock. They can stretch 5 minutes out so that it takes half an hour.

Our email system is playing silly buggers. I have just received an out of office reply from someone in this building, saying he will be out until Friday 10 December. However, the last email I sent him was several days ago, and he had already replied to that email.

ETA: "The Hobbit Movie Deviates from Official Tolkien Book." Well, who'd have thunk it?

I could imagine Legolas being somewhere in the background at the Elven King's house, but Galadriel?

I can imagine they're perhaps going to use Legolas instead of Thranduil.. though that may be a bit odd...

I've seen an online argument for Legolas being in charge of some of the eleves at the Battle of 5 Armies (allowable considering he is the King's son, but the original poster argued that he was being retrofitted in when Tolkien never mentioned him).

Ah but is Galadriel appearing because of The White Council and the attack on Dol Guldur (which I suspect will no longer be an aside about where Gandalf was ut a full blown scene/act)? Or also because of the council and the fact that the second film is supposed to cover the period between TH & LotR?

The Hobbit is written so closely from Bilbo's viewpoint that if they adapted it directly, one imagines it would be one of those annoying things shot exclusively on a handheld camera, with regular pauses for Bilbo to talk directly to the camera about how cold/uncomfortable/frightened/confused he is.

Tolkien regularly uses the device that what a character thinks is going on isn't necessarily the full picture (specially with hobbits). So I don't really see why the film shouldn't draw on the other books and appendices...

Of course there will probably be some changes that are less justified by looking at the other material (Wargs, I'm looking at YOU! ) but putting Legolas in his Dad's house, and including some Galadriel when she's supposed to be one of the No1 powers in the area and can project herself into other people's thoughts doesn't seem particularly wrong.
