but incurred the disapproval of Tolkien's publisher

Good thing I've already downloaded it, then... And if they struck a deal with the Russian author, and commissioned a professional translator, I would love to buy it and make them money.

I have to wonder how the quoted person thinks TLRB is infringing in any case. It is not a copy of TLOTR; it uses some characters from it but character copyright is not listed in the UK statute (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/48/contents) and I read that case law has not created character copyrights either (http://www.harbottle.com/hnl/pages/article_view_hnl/3844.php).

Unless the names have been turned into trademarksTM, which is why Dragon magazine once had a joke about the 'phone: circular metal banding...

By the way, I have been sent so much awful fanfic over the years that I would have trouble feeling sorry if the whole lot was banned.

If he meant trademark infringement then he shouldn’t have said copyright infringement… (The claim about the language it’s written in is rather bizarre now I come to notice it, assuming he was accurately quoted.)

some even have onsite pubs!

Wow, colleges with bars, who'd have thought students were interested in alcohol?

I despair at Harry Potter tourism.

The glampacker photo of the Keble College Quad gave me a bit of nostalgia for the 1992 Tolkien Centenary. I had a room overlooking that Quad. *sigh*

But that said ... what kind of preparation did the blogger make, that they didn't know there wasn't an "Oxford University campus"?

Oh well.

As for the bosses of the ceiling inspiring Tolkien's ents? I would have thought that looking up at actual trees would have done that for him much more thoroughly.
