On Mull

Well, we're coming to the end of the first week of our holiday, and what a great week it's been! We've seen:
- castles
- otters
- eagles (golden and white-tailed - and, in an aviary, bald)
- buzzards
- lots of small birds, like wheatears, stonechats and whinchats
- seals
- porpoises
- lots and lots and LOTS of puffins
- basalt columns (in Fingal's cave)
- Tornadoes
- and an aircraft carrier!

The weather has varied from great to glorious - food pretty good - drink likewise. I had oysters and guinness for lunch yesterday - mmm!

After a week in Tobermory*, we're now about to leave Mull for three days on Iona, then head back to the mainland for three more days in Oban.

*Tobermory features multifarious Balamory souvenirs, and the odd Saki** book. However, there are no wombles at all. *sulks*

**He wrote a story called Tobermory, about a talking cat. It's good.

Which aircraft carrier?

If you happen to catch 8 or 10 eagles we have a society project for eagle-powered flight, now that modern materials are available for the harness.

Alas, it was too far away, and the light too dim, to spot the number. I'm pretty sure it was one of ours, but beyond that I can't tell you, I'm afraid.

They tend to get a bit stroppy if you try to take eagles off the island ...

Tornadoes?! Eep. But the birds sound and look wonderful.

Oh, right. Capitalized. Heh. Cool!

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-07 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed - these are the sort with swing-wings, and lots of armaments under them! But the birds are, indeed, very cool!

Glad yuo had a nice time- I didn't know that you like Saki- which is your favourite story?

Been a big fan ever since they were read to us in English in the third year. Favourite? Hard to say - there are so many good ones! Gabriel-Ernest, maybe?

I like the reticence of Lady Anne. Nasty.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's another good one.

[identity profile] helflaed.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The other one I really like is the short novel "When William Came" which I find disturbingly believable for the time.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes.

OTOH, I cannot get into "The Westminster Alice" - no doubt very funny at the time, but "The time" was a hundred years ago!

[identity profile] helflaed.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't get into that either. Probably too many in jokes.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you read the recently-released collection of previously-unknown short stories?

[identity profile] helflaed.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No- sounds interesting.

Sounds like a fantastic holiday ::is green with envy:: I've never seen a wild otter, and would love to.

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
We were very pleased to be able to see them - close enough that we could see plenty of detail with binoculars, although not really close enough to photograph, unfortunately.

WOW WOW WOW! Eagles!!! And wild otters! And porpoises! (I can save them, but I've never seen one. Saw a glimpse of a dolphin once!)

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hebridean sheep, too :-)

[identity profile] wellinghall.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
We've been lucky enough to go whale-watching off both California and Iceland :-)
