We're back from Oxford.

Still in France... seen a snow bunting and heard an Alpine chough.

I like snow buntings. Seen them in Norway and Iceland.

Actually, young man, whilst you have some spare time... What would a large thrush-like bird be, mistle thrush? Greyish back, larger than a standard songthrush. Thanks.

We don't have a bird book here, only a mountain flower book.

Large and thrush-like sounds like mistle thrush to me (at least in this country; I don't know what might be seen in your snowy mountain fastness). They have a paler breast than a song-thrush.

That's it then. Thanks for the confirmation. Now, should I try to see a marmot?

I believe they are better with a little salt.

I'd have to catch the critter first. They are quite shy, mostly nocturnal. I see footprints under the chair lifts where they have been looking or dropped food.
