Three good things: Wednesday

Three good things for Wednesday:
- I not only got into work late*, I also left work early!
- Al Stewart tour dates have been announced, and he is coming to Bristol
- with Sarah's help, I can cross a few things off the "to do" list.

*Or at least, "late"; that is, about 8.30.

AKICOLJ

1) How common were cars with automatic gearboxes in the US in 1953? And in 1961?

2) I think we need a new wireless router. Any points I need to consider? Any recommendations? Any anti-recommendations?

The coldest winter in memory was 1709
The sea froze off the coast of France all along the Neptune line
By the lost town of Dunwich the shore was washed away
They say you hear the church bells still as they toll beneath the waves

Post-war development

And another one.

While no expert, I am tolerably familiar with post-WWII British history and politics. But how does it compare with the history and politics of other major European countries (eg Germany, Italy, France) for the same period?

There are obvious differences - France had been invaded and occupied; Germany and Italy had both been defeated in war; Germany had been partitioned. But how much did this affect their later development? What lessons could we have learned from them that we didn't?

(Um, this is turning into a huge subject! But any enlightened comments - [livejournal.com profile] philmophlegm, [livejournal.com profile] gramarye1971, [livejournal.com profile] parrot_knight, maybe? - would be much appreciated!)

Song title meme from [livejournal.com profile] dr_biscuit

Pick a musical artist whose discography you know fairly well. Using only their song titles, try to answer these questions. Try not to repeat a song title.

Pick your artist: Al Stewart

The good

We went for a walk on Sunday, and found a ruin, a pond (with dragonflies) and some blackberries, none of which we knew about.

I am getting on with sorting out our photos of Norway.

The new Al Stewart CD arrived this morning; so far (ie after two tracks!) it's pretty good.

We are going to see MastermindChampion and the rest of [livejournal.com profile] adaese's family on Saturday.

It's only nine days until Oxonmoot.

And eighteen days until the Al Stewart concert.

Dutch

Can anyone here write Dutch? I'm trying to send an email to a Dutch theatre about a booking, and they keep ignoring me; and I don't know whether this is because they can't understand my English, or because they ignore all emails on principle.

I've booked my ticket for the first night of Al Stewart's European tour! I'm going to see him in Zaandam (a suburb of Amsterdam) on 4 October. I'm sailing from Harwich overnight on 3 October, and sailing back overnight on 5 October.

Yay!

And here's a video of him:

Al Stewart (who is probably my favourite artist still performing) will be touring the Netherlands and Germany this autumn. He is also planning to tour the UK next spring.

Al Stewart

"Al is working with Laurence Juber on a new album. They are working towards release in the late spring or early summer of 2008."

Al Stewart

Does anyone else here listen to Al Stewart, and specifically his Beach Full Of Shells album? If so, let me know; there's a musical effect on it that I can't quite follow.
