Today: a checklist
Dec. 18th, 2010 08:01 pmListen to the cricket? Check.
Feel miserable? Check.
Walk? Check.
Post cards and buy paper? Check.
Drink tea, eat bacon roll and eat chocolate cake? Check.
Clear drive? Check.
Buy and spread rock salt? Check.
See Dawn Treader? Check.
Get very cold? Check, check.
Wish a happy birthday to
ewx? Check.
Think of appropriate lyrics? Check.
The coldest winter in memory was 1709
The sea froze off the coast of France all along the Neptune line
By the lost town of Dunwich the shore was washed away
They say you hear the church bells still as they toll beneath the waves

Post-war development
Jul. 22nd, 2010 11:23 amAnd another one.
While no expert, I am tolerably familiar with post-WWII British history and politics. But how does it compare with the history and politics of other major European countries (eg Germany, Italy, France) for the same period?
There are obvious differences - France had been invaded and occupied; Germany and Italy had both been defeated in war; Germany had been partitioned. But how much did this affect their later development? What lessons could we have learned from them that we didn't?
(Um, this is turning into a huge subject! But any enlightened comments -
philmophlegm,
gramarye1971,
parrot_knight, maybe? - would be much appreciated!)

We went for a walk on Sunday, and found a ruin, a pond (with dragonflies) and some blackberries, none of which we knew about.
I am getting on with sorting out our photos of Norway.
The new Al Stewart CD arrived this morning; so far (ie after two tracks!) it's pretty good.
We are going to see MastermindChampion and the rest of
adaese's family on Saturday.
It's only nine days until Oxonmoot.
And eighteen days until the Al Stewart concert.
