If my father hadn't left his new job before we actually got to move there, I might have grown up in Preston. My cousin went to university there, and her husband now has to travel there for work reasons from Northumberland quite often.
That's a bit poor :( I'd just do what I frankly quite often have to, and postpone birthday-fying to another more agreeable day, and then indulge in it properly.
7.17 isn't all that bad for an early riser like yourself though (although not too great), think about poor me on my occasional 5.30am London trains, it'd almost be more reasonable for me to stay up and count 5.30 as still the previous night time, although that doesn't work when you've got to keep going for a full day (it used to, I am too old now).
Maybe as it is your birthday you could treat yourself to a first class upgrade, that would make it infinitely nicer a trip IMO, I hear you even get free coffee n a paper? What luxury!
(I suspect a certain person you and I know well might have a scent bottle collection to rival them in her dresser drawers, it's quite intoxicating!, I can see the attraction though, esp when they have some scent still in them).
A 1st class upgrade seems an excellent idea, even if you do have to pay for that bit yourself. Have an official birthday too, that way you have an excuse to be spoilt twice :-)

*Have a piece of Morrison's maple syrup fudge*
