More from the diary of Samuel Pepys
May. 21st, 2006 11:05 amYesterday, up late, as there were no tradesmen due to call; although of those that did call a fortnight past, one does telephone every five minutes to seek our views, while one has yet to submit his quotation for the work to be done. It is difficult to say which of these is the more annoying. Then to the butcher, the newspaper seller, and the post office, there to collect a parcel containing the latest volume of Tolkien Studies; which did make interesting reading for the weekend. Creatrix did go to the dry cleaner, there to remonstrate with them for the damage they had done to her skirt; but she did get little joy, probably through being too soft on them.
In the after noon, Creatrix did do some work on the Proceedings, while I read the aforementioned Tolkien Studies, and a novel by Mistress Moon. Then to the pool, where we proceeded to swim; and I did manage 70 lengths, thus surpassing myself. Then to watch Mister Tennant and Mistress Piper; various young musicians; and diverse singers; being much taken with the entries from Finland and Lithuania, while thinking the British entry to be a load of b*ll*cks. And so to bed.
This forenoon, up late again, to be greeted with an "Oh dr*t" from Creatrix as she did spill the tea on the stair carpet. We then broke our fast on bacon and mushrooms, and freshly-squeezed orange juice. Creatrix then did off to church, while I did read the morning's missives, peruse the auctions, and continue to enlighten myself as to the works of Professor Tolkien. And now the kitchen doth beep at me; so I needs to hurry down the stairs to turn various knobs and press buttons until it ceases, and leaves me once again in peace.
