"Communities in the county may be split over whether or not to use 'peedie' or 'peerie', but councillors have made their decision.

Members of the OIC transportation committee were asked to consider renaming the Peerie Sea Loan the Peedie Sea Loan. Committee chairman, Councillor Jim Foubister, commented: 'I have been around when I remember it was the Peerie Sea, gradually it has been adjusted to be the Peedie Sea.' Councillor Allan Leslie said: 'Is it not on the ordinance survey maps as Peerie Sea?' Councillor Alistair Gordon added: 'We never called it the Peerie Sea, it was always the Peedie Sea.'

Councillors recommended the name be changed to Peedie Sea Loan."

(NB "Peerie" or "peedie" mean "little" in Orkney - probably connected with the French "petit".)
