Look at my LJ interests. Pick one that you find confusing or intriguing, and comment here. I’ll explain what it means and what makes it significant to me.

Then, if you want, please post this in your own LJ, if you’d be so kind, so that I can learn about your interests, too.

How long have you got? :-)

We went on holiday there about five years ago, and instantly fell in love with the place. The scenery is universally, well, er, scenic, and varies from the pastoral to the dramatic - you get well-tilled farmland, high moors, some of the highest sea cliffs in Britain; landscapes, seascapes, coastscapes and skyscapes. The people are friendly, and give you a great welcome. Lack of fuss, bother and formality (see my email on Loganair for some examples!) The food - especially beef, lamb, mutton, shellfish and fish - is tasty and varied; as is the drink, with two distilleries, a brewery and a fruit winery on the islands. There is a wealth of history around the place, from the 5,500 year old house at Knapp of Howar on Papa Westray to the German WWI wrecks on the seabed at Scapa Flow and the WWII Italian Chapel on Lamb's Holm. The air is clean and fresh. It's dark enough to see stars - lots of stars - and this time we hope we might be able to see the aurora borealis. There's wildlife galore, from visiting cetaceans, through seals and otters, to hen harriers and red-throated divers.

It's GREAT!!!

alternate history, aristocracy, beaujolais,

I was going to ask you the other day if you liked Biggles, now I don't need to

colchester, curling - ever done it?, haddon hall

jethro tull - I once met a little boy named after him (his Dad was a fan)

lord peter wimsey, miles vorkosigan, evie - who?

mornington crescent, temeraire, thrud - what?

redheads - is this obvious or more obscure?

(thunderbirds - nice one - you're a regular "boys' own adventure", aren't you

IMO you put too much personal information online. Or maybe that comment says more about me than it does about you.

With so many, it'll have to be one line each!

Alternate history, like the genre when it's well done.
Aristocracy, interested, having grown up so close to a Duke.
Beaujolais, the crus are well worth drinking.
Colchester, nice Roman (and pre-Roman!) town.
Curling, not done itm but like the idea.
Haddon Hall, the most perfectly preserved manor house in England.
Jethro Tull, a friend of mine at school got me into it.
Lord Peter Wimsey, central character in Clouds of Witness and other.
Miles Vorkosigan, from Lois McMaster Bujold's books.
Evie, a little village in Orkney where our favourite hotel is.
Mornington Cresent, what you play on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.
Temeraire, the drago in the books by Naomi Novik.
Thrud, a cartoon that originated in White Dwarf.
Redheads, fairly obvious I think.
Thunderbirds, well what boy doesn't like them?

The first is the classic WWII heavy bomber (arguably from any nation, although I'm not trying to stir up any UK / US rivalry here). The third is a slightly quirky choice - as a long-range WWII bomber it would have been great, but Hiroshima and Nagasaki effectively out paid to its chance of operating in that sphere; as a post-war bomber in what was effectively the jet age, it was outclassed. The Vulcan was *the* great jet bomber, when designed and built, it outshone all its rivals, and outclassed its oponents too.

I come from Lincolnshire (when it suits me; Leicestershire at other times), which is "Bomber County", and effectively home to all these planes.

Ah, I see. You'd have much to discuss with my husband [livejournal.com profile] rocketmensch (if he ever gets on the stick and decides to write something). He's the airplane geek in the family!
