I left work a few minutes after five last night. I got in again a few minutes after eight this morning.

In that time, I received ten emails. This seems excessive.

Not exageratting but in the past I have gone home and come in the next day to 200+ emails. That's when you know the stuff has hit the fan :-)

I'm usually somewhere between you and malaheed.

At the start of this week, my inbox contained about 500 emails and my overfill inbox on my hard disk (rather than on the Exchange server) contained 6,400. I've had to be in the office all week and have had a steady stream of queries to answer, but apart from that, I haven't actually been that busy, so I've been taking the opportunity to reduce those numbers.

As of now, I have 3 emails in my inbox and 1,349 in my overspill.

Part of this is from using Outlook's rules facility to set up rules so that emails from certain addresses get sent to a 'bacon'* directory rather than the inbox. Annoyingly, the maximum size that Outlook 2003 rules are allowed in total is 32kb, which isn't a lot - and isn't enough for all the rules I wanted, so I'm still having to do some manual deleting and moving.

* 'Bacon' is a bit like 'spam', except that you are sort of responsible for getting it. Mailings from Amazon, LiveJournal or Facebook notifications or newsletters from airlines are 'bacon'.

It doesn't seem excessive to me, it seems like people just do their work when they feel like it nowadays. I sent emails at all sorts of odd times :)

Have you heard of the book/theory "don't read your emails in the morning"?

I can't claim credit for it. I think I first encountered the term in PC Pro magazine.

Update at 5.00pm (i.e. close of business for me):

5 emails in inbox.
None in overspill folder.

Very pleased.

Am resisting temptation to look at inbox using Blackberry just so that I can delete new emails.
