When I was little, we didn't have mains electricity, water or sewerage

True. Odd, but true. And to make it odder, I'm not that old, and it wasn't that far away - look at my profile for more information.

I wanted to join the Royal Air Force

False. I actually wanted to join the Royal Navy. I had a first interview, but due to a couple of administrative cock-ups, didn't get as far as the second interview. I was annoyed at the time, but now I'm grateful.

I've been to Russia, America and India

True. Admittedly, Russia was just a stop on the way to India, and that was when I was just a baby ... my grandfather spent many years working in Delhi.

I used to smoke twenty a day

False. On the contrary, I have never smoked.

My grandfather won Best of Breed nine years' running at Crufts

True. With two of his flat-coated retrievers. I am immensely proud of him for that.

I've edited three books about Tolkien

False. Only two so far; and arguably they're not really books, more booklets (although they do have ISBNs).

My sister has just this year sold a house with no mains water or sewerage: they did have mains electricity, but it was dodgy so they had a backup generator.

I assume you did have some sort of electricity? I can remember meeting people who lived entirely without it, and drew water from a well, in Devon in the 1980's. They were pretty old though: surely there cannot be many people now living that way in the UK now.

We had a generator. This was until I was about five, maybe.
