Funnily enough, only yesterday, I began reading 'This Far Land', an out of print book on Tolkien that I purchased recently, and there is a chapter in there by Diana Wynne Jones on the shape of the narrative in LOTR so she oviously remembered something from his lectures!

I remember reading that from the library when I was a teenager (back in the dark ages) - she seemed to be the only author in the whole collection who "got" Tolkien. Everyone else seemed to be far too obsessed with sneering at him for not being a standard literary author.

So she may not have got on with his lectures but she certainly didn't come away with a completely negative view of him.

I've only read a couple of chapters so far but I've been quite surprised at the negative tone. As you say, they don't really seem to 'get it' at all, and interestingly, the copy I have is an ex-library book where someone has actually written 'complete rubbish' in the margin at one point!
