What would your specialist subject(s) be?

The safest specialist subject for me would be Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister, but I could probably do a decent job on the Salem Witch Trials or the 1964-1970 Labour Government.

Ooh, don't know. Probably something I know a bit about already but which is narrow enough that it would be relatively easy to revise.

I note from the wikipedia entry that the 1975 winner's specialist subjects were pretty much the cyllabus for one of my A-levels. Also, I wonder what was wrong with 'The banana industry' as a specialist subject.

It always surprises me that some people get away with remarkably narrow specialist subjects. 'The anglican cathedral in Liverpool' - that's one building and it's not even particularly old. Compare to 'French literature', 'The history of Wales 400-1100', or 'Solar System'.

I'm assuming Durham Student Union, 1998-2001 and/or The Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey would be too specific? I could make a pretty good stab at The Archers, Graham Greene and Noel Streatfeild...

The life and times of gurthaew? Or, if pushed, the khmer culture from ca. 600ad to 1300ad.

I think I'm too much of a generalist for Mastermind. I have a rather broad knowledge of various subjects, but it's really not deep enough.

When I was in my teens, though, there was a German version of the show on national television, and I was aghast that the guy who'd chosen The X-Files as his focus knew so little about what was then my favourite show. My 16-year-old self would have stumped him.
