I would like to say how impressed I am with the Department of English at the University of Leeds. Last Sunday, I emailed them to ask if they could supply me with a copy of an article they published 22 years ago; more in hope than in expectation. By Thursday, they had hunted through their stockroom, found it, and posted it to me. They didn't even ask for payment first, but instead sent an invoice.

As I said - I'm impressed!

Very impressive indeed. I've corresponded with a philosophy professor there in the past. He was wonderfully generous. Must be a policy there.

The staff are very good (esp. the postgrad staff). I know, as I had various money related issues and had to negociate with them several times and they were always very polite. -me, the University of Leeds School of English alumni.

I've been to a conference at Leeds. It was well-organized, but the person responsible for it - a Victorianist in the English Faculty - was not at all enthusiastic about the University, he said they were overworked, underpaid, short of staff, and it was not a career choice he would make again. That's just one individiual's viewpoint, of course, and probably reflects more on working conditions in universities in general, rather than Leeds in particular, but I do remember coming away from there in a very downcast mood. The mostly north of England academics in attendance there seemed to gripe more about the hardships of their lot than I've heard at similar do's in Oxbridge.

Maybe Oxbridge is a cushy number in terms of work/life/money balance?

I was wondering about that. I don't know if anyone here has enough experience of both Oxbridge and non-Oxbridge to be able to answer that?
