Where are these fabulous beasts?

I mean I've heard of the Chiltern cattle, but Luing? They sound chinese....

Looks like there's a whole society devoted to them (http://luingcattlesociety.co.uk/public/index.php)

Although, I'm a little concerned that the Luing Cow is "self-replacing". Does that mean it just regrows when it dies?

Also reassuringly it has "correct feet and legs". Wouldn't like to think what the consequences would be if it grew a ducks feet by mistake...

I used to be a member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, which is probably why I appear to be the only person (so far) who's heard of them. I really should get around to joining again...

I have cheated by saying "yes", as it was true when I answered the poll.

Five minutes ago the answer may possibly have been different.

You can be involved with rare breeds at Wightfrag, or indeed AGOT.

I intend to have them well done rather than rare, though ;-)

I suppose this raises the interesting problem of how one defines fame. Polo is always gasping with astonishment about people I can't recognise or remember. Sportsmen, mostly.

It is nice to see that you have managed to raise the profile of the Luing cow to this small yet multinational audience. :D

"AGOT" ?

I have eaten North Ronaldsay seaweed-eating sheep, and the closely related Holm of Papay sheep; both were very tasty!

If the rare breed is in sausage form, then I too prefer it well done :-)

If in steak form, then you can't beat a rare rare breed IMHO. (Unless you use a stick of course...)

Luing is near Oban and the isle of Mull, which we are going to in April / May.
