The frescoes were supposed to show some of the strange and remarkable creatures Vasco da Gama had seen on his trip to the Indies. Peacocks, ramping leopards and fantastical hens, ordinary enough. But if it weren't for those frescoes we would never have known of his discovery of live wyverns and hydras.

Amazing how grass snakes become hydras and flying squirrels and gliding tree snakes and lizards become dragons.

Oh, wonderful! Thank you!! It's like looking down through all the centuries - and I like the painting of the bathing woman/sprite very much, too. (are the bestiary ones the ones I can see on the wall, in the third last picture, the frescoes?)

The third last picture shows some wall decoration around the baths; the last two show VdG's frescoes.
