I said Sort Of because I remember Monday and lunch/siesta closing from Italy, and Wednesday afternoon and Saturday afternoon closing from Germany, but not from here.

We were in Liskeard a couple of Saturdays ago (market town in south-east Cornwall), just along the A38 from Plymouth. A good third of the shops had already closed.

Not only that, but I remember, in a small town not unknown to you, that once a week (Tuesdays) the traffic warden used to arrive in town, and each week one of the local butchers used to put a large notice in his shop window to that effect (evidently with a certain amount of resentment). I also remember when Kings sold polo mints for 6p a packet (do you remember Kings on the corner?)

No, sorry - but it is more than 27 years since I left the place!

In this part of the country shops closed on a weekday afternoon, but not on Saturdays, at least as long ago as the 1950s. (I asked Mum :-D) The weekday afternoon thing definitely ended in my lifetime, probably around the early 1980s.

Apparently it was very organised, with different towns having different days.

I'm fairly sure that Thursday was early closing day in Kendal...

Tuesday in Melton? Was that not market day when you lived round here?

I was torn between 'yes' and 'they still do' - because just a few shops close on a Wednesday where I live, which is darned annoying if you want to go to one on that day! Long ago, you of course knew when shops would be closed in your area, but because it's not universal these days, it's hard to remember which ones do. Annoying.

I think the post office is the only one in Harlington that does. I haven't found any in Luton that do, but then there aren't that many shops in Luton I go into - Smiths, Boots, Waterstones, Ottakers, M&S account for a good 90% of my shopping in Luton.
