Can anyone recommend a non-steam iron? My grandmother can't get on with steam irons, and can't find any other sort. She doesn't want a travel iron.

Wish I could help, but the mental image I just got of an iron rolling down a railway pulling old-fashioned carriages suggests my brain isn't in best nick today even if I did know of one >_>

I use my 'steam' iron without any water in it. I spray water on the clothes instead (because that way you don't get stupid drippy bits). Would this circumvent the difficulty?

Steam irons aren't generally as heavy as dry irons. I like a nice heavy iron, because I find it easier to use. With light ones I find myself using a lot of energy pressing it hard into the fabric. I'm not sure whether I need to or not, it just doesn't feel like it's pressing properly if it's not heavy...

That is what Hibernia The Balrog does.

I can't recommend them, because I've not used them, but I've found this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-GC148-1025-Watts-electromax/dp/B000NHQHX4/ref=pd_bbs_1/202-3001998-4331835?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1183547829&sr=8-1) and this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/MicroMark-Micromark-Dry-Iron-52172/dp/B000PVBSZA/ref=pd_sbs_kh_3/202-3001998-4331835?ie=UTF8&qid=1183547829&sr=8-1) on Amazon...

Hope that helps...

Why not simply not put any water in the steam iron? Then it will presumably work exactly the same as a non-steam iron?

Non steam temperatures are higher than steam, and a dedicated steam iron might not get hot enough.

My mother uses a non-steam iron, it is small and quite light. She seems quite happy with how it performs. I'll try and find out details.

Try and find a working one in a retro shop. We have a steam iron (£5 from tesco) and an ancient 1950s electric iron (still have the box too) that came from my grandmother's pantry - cord is wrapped round several times with masking tape but it works very well and is used more than the steam iron because it does the job quicker.

Interesting, as I am still using my grandmother's steam iron, which was not new when it was given to me in 1964. But it has a non-steam mode, too. Has that alternative vanished from modern irons?

I've recently bought a steam iron from Sainsbury's - they do sensible, cheap irons. I know this doesn't actually sound helpful, but I'm fairly sure that I saw an even more basic, non-steam iron while I was there.

All my previous irons had steam/non-steam alternatives; you didn't have to put water in them, and the temperature went up higher than the 'steam' option. I can't believe they don't still make irons like this - if you can't get one without steam at all.
