From my new (2nd hand) copy of "Strategic Bombers, 1945 - 1985"

"The very long range of the B-36 led to experiments to improve the aircraft's survivability over hostile territory. As no fighter could escort the B-36, an incredibly small 'parasite" fighter (the XF-85 Goblin) was developed by McDonnell for carriage in the bomb bay, release and retrieval being adchived by means of a hook-on trapeze. Although flown, the Goblin did not become operational. However, one B-36 squadron flew modified Rupublic GRF-84F Thunderflash reconnaisance aircraft from specially adapted GRB-36s to undertake high-speed strategic reconnaisance flights over selected areas. Here a Republic single-seater prepares to be retrieved by a GRB-36 motherplane."
