Up betimes, to await the arrival of one Mr T___, a handy-man. He gave his views on the practically of re-decorating our bedrooms, stairs and loft / study; and did mention a figure that was within the capabilities of our purse.

Then to Flitwick, to dispose of diverse elderly books, weskits and household implements, in the manner of giving alms. The charity shop did take most of these off our hands; but did reject some of the bulkier and heavier items, which did cause much back and shoulder strain as I carried them homewards.

Eventually, and only just within the promised fore-noon, there did arrive a man from the carpet shop. He measured the aforesaid rooms, and after much pressing of buttons on his calculating device, did mention a figure which seemed to us to be high.

After a meagre luncheon, we did repair to the parish church, there to witness the dedication of our new pipe-organ. This was originally made by one Trustam, and was given to us by the most generous parish of Ecton. It made a good sound, and was accompanied by a choir from the college of Royal Holloway.

There were then sandwiches, St Agatha buns, and tea; and much discourse upon the service, the organ, the choir, and various minor matters of import to no-one but the tellers.

I then repaired homewards, to write this in my diary, to read the afternoon's missives and reply to same, and to prepare for our next brief outing; which will be brief, as we will need to return for the evening's entertainment, to be provided to us by one Mister Tennant, one Mistress Piper, and one Mister Nation.

*chuckles*. Nicely done. So, are you going to write your entire journal in this style from now on?

Thank you!

I can but try, ma'am; for I am a humble scribe, and as yet untrained in this art of writing.

Please don't, fun though it is, my attention span wouldn't cope.

Melikes!

I own the complete Pepys diary, but am ashamed to admit I haven't got through it yet...

Thank you, good lady; if critical acclaim continues at this level, methinks I may even try further diary entries in this style.

Critical opinion doth seem to be divided upon this matter. Mayhap I shall try to pen only occasional diary entries in this style?

The mention of Flitwick puts you in a far worse light than the archaic writing style. The next thing you'll be doing is admitting an acqaintance with Andrew Underwood.

Ma'am, this is the village named Flitwick in the county of Bedfordshire; admittedly an ill-favoured place, yet better supplied with shops than our own meagre hamlet.

The name of "Andrew Underwood" does ring the faintest of bells, although I cannot charge my mind as to the details of our acquaintance. I am more thoroughly acquainted with others of that name, in particular Derek (who did spin the cricket ball most effectively for the county of Kent), and the brethren Rory and Anthony (who displayed grace and style for Leicester Football Club).

Prithee, kind sir, to enlighten me on the precise form and nature of that comestible to which you gave the name "St Agatha buns".

Ma'am, a "St Agatha bun" takes the form of a flat, round cake, covered with icing and a cheery, with a further cherry and dried grapes inside. The whole is then halved, the two halves being spread with blackcurrant jam and fresh whipped cream; these then being reassembled, the whole making a tasty comestible for one or two persons. However, the eater does need to take care, or the eater's fingers, face and person will become covered with the aforesaid cream and jam.

They make an enjoyable breakfast, too ;-)

Thank you - they sound perfectly delicious. Definitely not to be eaten in polite company, though, if cream and jam is likely to escape. I'll have to experiment...

Yes, there were too many smartly dressed people handing back messy plates and looking for napkins yesterday!

They are on the large side for a single person - we split one between two of us this morning, making an adequate breakfast. They are essentially round, although a perfect circle is by no means essential; rather flat; and somewhat like a very flattened cone, with the base being the widest part.

The top is iced, with a cherry in the centre. The dough contains a few raisins, and one more cherry, just below the one on top. They are backed, then split in half; the bottom half spread liberally with blackcurrant jam, the top half slightly less liberally with whipped cream; and then reassembled.

They're good, but as impressive for their meaning and their symbolism (our church was briefly dedicated to St Agatha) as for their taste.

The St Agatha buns sound lovely, must have a go at making them at some point. They definitely sound like an ideal thing to have for breakfast!

(Actually, they looked slightly better than they tasted; but they were still rather fun!)

Mr T?! I Pity the Foo'! lol. ;)

What are St Agatha buns? For some reason I don't remember coming across them when I lived in the UK...
