They're bright red beetles that eat lilies! The only way I know of is to pick them off one by one and squash them, but they usually manage to evade my cunning fingers.
My best remedy for sore throats, especially if they are associated with mucus, is to gargle with hot salt water--as hot and as salty as you can stand. It has always helped in my experience.
