The effortless meme (on my part, at least):

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list.

Some of you I know relatively well. Some I know very well; one or two of you I even know in RL.

Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself? It can be any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." I might feel compelled to mock your musical taste, but I'll certainly remember you.

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

I really, really hate packing, and I am procrastinating from it even as I write this.

Sorry, not awfully interesting, but the first thing that occurred.

I also hate packing. However I love oranges. When I was a teenager, my sisters and I were banned from eating more than two a day. One of the things I like about this time of year is the quality of the oranges. I don't know how I'd have endured orange-based sanctions against South Africa, were it not that during that period I hated oranges due to an unfortunate coinciding of a gastric flu bug, a clementine, and my 8th birthday.

You did say anything!

wow, you and Larry Norman! It's probably also very good for the diet (so much of taste is in the sense of smell...) interesting...

OK, why not... but I don't promise to post this on my on LJ. It's actually been nice to get to know you better and if you hadn't friended me on LJ, I doubt I'd get the chance.

Let's see... I love Scottish Country dancing and wrapping Christmas presents. I have 7 names, though in Norway I cut that down to 2. My country is warmer, but where I live is prettier.

I love singing. I also play the piano (reasonably well), the guitar (well enough to play hymns), five different types of recorder (sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass), the occarina, and the viola (though I haven't touched one for years). But mainly I sing! Did I mention that I love singing..?

I probably would never have joined CTS had the Soc Fair stall not been manned by someone I knew-ish from my school (in the year above).

I've only liked tea for 3 years, and coffee for even less time.
I'm better at playing the tenor saxophone than the clarinet despite having actually had 7 years of lessons for the latter (reached the 'lofty' grade 5) and only 5 lessons for the former.

I am a minor incarnation of the Great God Ah-zothoth. My primary concern is in the area of fudge and toffee-based foodstuffs. (Ah-zothoth is primarily concerned with events happening on Alpha Centauri, us earth-based incarnations are basically just here to maintain a diplomatic presence).

(OK, it's not a gem, as such. Nor is it knowledge. It's more of a fudgy nugget.)

I breed and show cats, and used to ride horses - and will again some day. I was introduced to SF fandom by a member of First Fandom (Terry Jeeves) and met my cater-cousin (look it up) while standing at the press cuttings board at Seacon 79. Though I can't sing a note in tune, I adore filk and filk cons, though I haven't been to one for years because our cat sitter takes her holiday then and from this you can tell that I am more interested in the words of songs than the music that accompanies them.

Hmmm, I feel a bit like Sam, talking to Rosie before the Scouring of the Shire: "It needed a week's answer, or none."

Music: I am a pianist. Chosen field of creativity: Fabric art, mostly patchwork and quilts. That means I take perfectly good fabrics (even relatively expensive novelties), cut them into pieces, and sew them back together (not as they were before, of course), thereby losing many inches of seam allowances. Nationality: USA by birth, living in Germany by personal choice. Fortunately, I dearly love travelling, even packing!

So, as I posted this on my blog, I get an answer from you there, right?

I reached grade 7 on the piano, but never considered myself any good, and I haven't played for years. I studied singing, and in the only exam I ever took, Guildhall Grade 5, I came joint highest in the London area. I once played 'Papagena' in The Magic Flute; I also once played principal boy in a pantomime. I went to ballet as a child and was totally hopeless; but I was quite good at ballroom dancing, which enabled me to find a husband.

Oh, curses, Bunn beat me to the type of comment I'd planned to do, so I'm reduced to the realms of reality.

Oh, help. I don't do reality, only deliberately over-dramatic flights of fancy. *struggles to think of anything*

Okay. When I was a little, I detested dolls so much that when I was given one, I shut it in a cupboard and cackled about the fact that it was crying now. However, I used to fall out of bed because I cherished my soft toys so much that I gave them all the best places in the bed. Somewhere between the two of these, I think I've grown up normal... Oh, never mind. ;-)

The most expensive (retail price) piece of electronic equipment in my house is a computer keyboard. And I never went above grade five on the piano because at that point I decided I was more interested in learning to play music I liked than getting meaningless bits of paper.

Way back in the mists of time, members of my family worked on the Bayeux tapestry. There's also a family rumour that a relative of mine was one of the assassins of Thomas a Becket (not sure that's something to boast about!)
I was featured on a TV program in China.

According to one popular family story:

I am a descendant of a highly serendipitous meeting of Irish and German folk. The German part because my great-grandfather was emigrating from Stuttgart to America and got thrown off the boat at England due to having contracted dysentery and was therefore posing 'a health risk'. He bumped into my great-grandmother (presumably once he was healthy again) who was in service to an aristocratic Irish family (who just happened to be travelling in England at the time).

How they pulled that one off, I'll never know.

Historically, according to my father, my mother's antecedents are Cornish-Swedish-Geordie-Jew and his Bastard-Welsh-Chapel I figure this makes me British. That being the case, I obviously had to move to New Zealand. At least here my RP accent makes me sound cultured, witty and posh.

Physically, I'm short and fat, with great hair, good skin apalling shortsightedness and (I'm told) a friendly smile.

Professionally I'm a writer of fiction and poetry (i.e. I occasionally get paid for doing it) , and a teacher of Creative Writing, Communication and Drama related subjects at Massey University.

Socially, I'm a cooking, singing, reading, theatre-going, cinema-loving, multisport-supporting, travelling occasional director of amateur dramatics.

and famillially I've been a daughter for 43 years, a sister (however reluctantly) for 42, a wife for 21, a mother for 20 and a grandmother for 11 months.

And I don't update LJ as often as I should.
