English (not British, although technically I'm about one-eighth Scottish)

2. If you were being sent to a desert island and could choose between an unlimited supply of books and an unlimited supply of writing materials, which would you take with you, and why?

Books. I won't even take the cop-out answer from almost everyone else, that books give you (a) writing paper and (b) the knowledge of how to make writing materials.

3. Would you rather lose your hearing or your sight?

Hearing. I can't imagine a world without books to read.

4. What is the earliest major news event you can remember?

Petrol reaching 73p a gallon, in ?1973, as reported on John Craven's Newsround (as it was then). Telling my Dad, and him saying that he wouldn't be surprised if it reached £1 a gallon.

5. Do you have any phobias?

Two many people. Needles.

6. Which five people (living, dead, real, imaginary) would you invite to a dinner party?

Living

No (but yes to strong attraction).

19. Which film would you most like to have directed?

The ultimate haunted house movie.

20. Which sport would you most like to win an Olympic gold medal in?

Hmm, I don't think either cricket or footbow are Olympic sports, so that would have to leave Rugby sevens.

Why 26?

2. Books. I don't write for pleasure much unless it is TO people, which it wouldn't be alone on a desert island. And the "cop-outs" are very sensible points.

3. Hearing. Music can still be felt (I believe - I've met a deaf musician), I could still do silly dancing to it without banging into people, and I wouldn't like life without seeing the sunset, the ocean, art, and reading, either. And I like being able to drive myself to where I want to go.

11. DW question: which is YOUR Doctor?

Has to be Tom Baker. Although I like CE and DT too, and didn't think PD & CB were too bad either?

12. Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

Evelyn Glennie, Roy Castle, Ted Nasmith, William Hague & Wayne Sleep (just about)...might be a few more, I forget. (It's not the sort of thing that concerns me much).

14. Which instrument would you most like to be a virtuoso on?

The violin.

20. Which sport would you most like to win an Olympic gold medal in?

Gymnastics, riding, modern pentathlon, ice skating, women's decathlon (when they get around to including it), wouldn't really mind though, one Olympic medal is as good as the next.

21. If you could put yourself as any person/type of person in any place in any period of history, who/what/when/where would you be, and why?

Too much choice.

26. Tell me something else about yourself.

I wanted to be a doctor. For a while. Twice. But not now, or not much.

Stow

I feel a dinner party with both Tolkien and Beorhtnoth would be fascinating, but rather high-risk....
