Things that wind [livejournal.com profile] wellinghall up.

1. Talking to HMRC.

2. Idiots in the admin company who choose today to tell me that they haven't been doing something all year.

Amazing! It looks like wellinghall is normal! Talking to HMRC winds most people up. ;-)

Talk to local tax office. Me: "Can you give me this information?" Them: "No, you need to ring central office, on number so-and-so".

Ring central office. Me: "Can you give me this information?" Them: "No, you need to ring your local office, on number such-and-such [different from the number I used first time]."

Ring local office on second number. On hold for 20 minutes, then cut off.

Ring local office on second number again. On hold for 20 minutes; finally answered. Me: "Can you give me this information?" Them: "No, we're not allowed to give out that information over the phone." Me: "Then why was I told you could?" Them: "Don't know."

Needed something else as well, which they said they could post to me. Them: "What's you address?" Me: [no X, YYY road ... ] Them: "N, that's not what we've got." Me: "Well I've been telling you for seven bl**dy years that you've got it wrong!!!"

(And that was just from reading the conversation...)

A little while ago, it was:

"Hello, my client has received a notice to pay from you. Can I discuss it with the relevant Inspector?"

"What's the company's reference number?"

"It doesn't have one, it's exempt from UK tax"

"What's its name? I'll look it up that way"

"XXXX"

"You're not registered as the taxpayer's agent"

"I know, they're exempt from tax and so don't need an agent. That's kind of what I wanted to talk to the Inspector about"

"I can't talk to you unless you're authorised as the taxpayer's agent"

"So you need to register it as a taxpayer before I can tell you that it isn't one...?"

Though to be fair they have a lot of nice helpful people. The main problem is that they've made everyone's jobs so narrow that they haven't the flexibility to do much.

re. no 2 - I'd like to think by "all year" you mean "for all of 2008 so far", but I have a horrible suspicion you mean "all financial year so far"... Not good ;-(

Technically I mean, "Since 1 July 2007." I realise that this doesn't fit into any sensible definition of "year" ...

Yes, it does. I know of two organisatins who's financial year runs from July to June. Seems quite reasonable to me.

I can only assume I'm very lucky to have avoided talking to HMRC so far, long may it continue.

I have found some individuals to be helpful, but the organisation as a whole to be completely unwieldy.
