What's the best way to get from the Isle of Wight to Heathrow by public transport? ( ... on a bank holiday Monday ... ?)

Ferry to Southampton, train to Woking, bus to Heathrow.

Or train to Waterloo, other train back out to Heathrow.

Or get an airport car laid on to pick you up from the ferry. The price of train tickets these days it may be cheaper, assuming there are two of you.

I would expect going via London to be time-consuming and expensive. But it would avoid bus-travel...

The Woking-Heathrow bus is usually on-time. The same cannot be said for the Heathrow-Woking bus, which often disappears before it leaves.

[x] don't

Portsmouth to Heathrow is about 2 and a bit hours (train to Woking, bus thence to LHR).
Southampton to Heathrow is a similar duration (train to Reading, thence bus to LHR).
Lymington to Heathrow is a bit longer (train to Brockenhurs, change to train to Reading, thence bus).

You can get a ferry to all of those places (Cowes to Southampton, Fishbourne (nr Ryde) to Portsmouth and Yarmouth to Lymington).

Although as you will presumably be starting in Cowes, one route has a slight advantage over the others... ;-)

Well, there you go, actuary, you see. Why bother with complete information when you can just stick an assumption or two in to paper the cracks if there's something missing? ;-)

I don't tend to use netspeak in polite conversation, but...

Most island people book taxis for this. There are lots of companies that specialise in taking people from the ferry ports to the airports. I don't know how the cost compares with regular public transport for foot passengers, but it comes out cheaper than taking a car over on the ferry, and then paying for airport parking, which is why everyone does it.

If you could email me a phone number or two, that would be helpful.

I can't find the Yellow Pages, but I got good results by Googling "southampton airport transfer heathrow" (I had to add the "Heathrow", to make clear that I didn't just mean taxis to Southampton airport.)

That's a thought... Is your destination one that can be reached by Southampton airport?

I've got it, it's in my Um... tray.

Do we want it back at home?
