Last night, I saw a bit of the Stephen Fry "Gutenberg" programme. Fascinating. Am I the only one who hadn't drawn a connection between the words "vellum" and "veal" before? And I was intrigued by the (mass-)production of paper.

We woke this morning to the sad news that Humphrey Lyttleton - jazz musician, presenter of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and all-round good guy - has died :-(

Later this morning, we're going into London. Creatrix has spotted that there is a Pont (WWII-era Punch cartoonist) exhibition on at the Cartoon Museum (no, I didn't know it existed either). Then we're meeting her mother, sister and three small nieces (9, 7 and 5, I think) for lunch. After that, the ladies are going to see Sleeping Beauty at Covent Garden, while I head back home.

This afternoon, I should sort out the bookcase we are disposing of to a neighbour, and hang some of the many pictures that are currently occupying the spare bed. Note the "should". I will probably slob around doing Not Very Much.

Next weekend, we are going to see [livejournal.com profile] rustica. The weekend after, to my parents', to go to a cousin's wedding.

I think that I was told about what vellum was made from in my very first lecture at Library School, and at that point the connection between the words origins just slipped into my consciousness, and then slipped away again...

I saw that programme too, it was great wasn't it? :)
I had never made the connection between the printing press and the wine press!

Bother, missed it due to shenanigans at work (was back in time to see it, but for some reason didn't look in RT. Too busy opening bottle of Lagunilla 2003 Rioja (half price at Morrisons, and while possibly not worth the original £10, well worth the half-price and goes amazingly well with congealed bread-and-butter pudding).

I had not made the veal/vellum connection. But I knew vellum was bovine.

Sounds like an interesting programme! (If you're interested in that sort of thing, can I recommend the abridged version of Elizabeth Eisenstein (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Printing-Revolution-Early-Modern-Europe/dp/0521607744/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209238166&sr=8-1) on the subject?)
