What is the largest-capacity memory stick one can buy?

Or - I've seen a 32GB one - does anyone know if a larger one is available?

You could get a bus-powered 2.5" USB2 enclosure and stick a 250GB disk drive in it. They are small enough to fit in your pocket though you probably wouldn't want to put one on a keyring.

You can buy those off the shelf at PC World now, for the same sort of price I paid for a 256 megabyte flash drive a few years ago (and half the price of a 2 gigabyte hard disk I once bought for my 75 megahertz pentium PC). I've not seen any flash drive larger than 32 gigabytes, but give it a couple of months...

Google suggests that 64Gb sticks exist, but seem quite hard to track down.

I haven't recently checked max size, but I have had a 16G one for over a year, so larger must surely exist by now. You need to consider write speed. It can take impractically long to do an initial backup to one of those unless you have a fast enough write speed, though read speed is less of an issue.

The advantage of a usb memory is that it can survive being dropped, and you can get ones like the Corsair I have that has a waterproof cover, so it will survive anything save EMP.

The disk drive won't do that, but can easilu get 250G that runs at 7200 and writes MUCH faster than flash, for well under £100. Western Digital - my 160G version has been working well for a while now.

Just a thought, but you can get flash drives that come with fingerprint recognition and encryption now - assuming this is for the working from home project. Though probably there is software you cound install on a standard portable disk too.

Not that I use it, because what do I know, I'm an SME, I don't got no data worth the nicking. :-D
