Yeah like it so hurts just tick "positive" and to tap in "Thanks etc"

Oh yeah I feel your pain. I much prefer the ones who'll at least offer to refund, even though they're losing out too. Blaming it on the post is rather lame too.

Because it's the rules is sometimes the only option. I've just started work as a security guard at a large engineering works, and though we're usually fairly relaxed about letting people we know in, we recently had a guy sacked under less than cordial circumstances. If we hadn't been given specific instructions to make sure he left site and invalidate his pass, he probably could have gone anywhere he wanted.

If you forgot your own pass, well that's your fault. If it doesn't work the way it should, then IT are to blame. If the general entrance policy is inconsistent, that's down to management. It's usually nothing to do with the guy on the gate who could lose his job if he doesn't do what he is told.

We do all sorts of pointless things every day, but it's part of our job description, so we've gotta do it. If the guard was unfriendly and hostile though, there's no need for that. That's just unprofessional.

Thanks for this - it's interesting to see the issue from another side.

The guard was neither unfriendly nor hostile. I suppose the people who are really to blame are management. If you turn up without a pass in the week, you give your name, phone no etc to the receptionist, and she gives you a temporary pass. If she recognises you, it makes the process a bit simpler & quicker, but you still go through the same process; and you get a pass whether she knows you or not.

At the weekend, you must have your own pass; even if the guard recognises you, he isn't allowed to let you in without one, and the system isn't set up to give out temporary passes at the weekend.

I might ask why the system is set up the way it is.

Well we've got it better arranged than that, because we are the receptionists as well as security, which makes sense - fewer lines of communication to get confused by - and we issue and control all the temp passes, and can do so any tmie we think suitable. Also, we don't have weekend staff, we all do a combination of weekdays, nights and weekends, so we tend to get to know everyone eventually.

We do however tell one little white lie to make things run more smoothly. If a temp pass isn't returned within 24 hours it gets cancelled. We tell everyone IT do that, but it's actually us who have complete control over the card system. It has prevented lots of people trying to make us compromise then get arsy when we don't.
