Awesome pictures! They remind me of a film my daughter once saw, called "The Secret of Roan Inish." Different area, I know, but the beautiful scenery was very similar.

What is the ruined building in CNV00002-1.jpg?

That is the Earl's Palace in Kirkwall. It was built around 1600 by Earl Robert Stewart and his son, Earl Patrick Stewart. It is a magnificent piece of architecture, although I'm afraid to say that the earls were not so magnificent.

Just across the road is the Bishop's Palace. The rivalry between the bishops and the earls lives on in the Ba' (or ball) games played on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
