Butchers shop to be bought by gun stock maker?

New fish and chip van in the village - overwhelmed by demand!

Oddly enough- our surname actually means spear shaft or gun stock maker!

Pleased for you/ all the village re the (daft) plans being dropped. No time to read why but the fact stands as it is really. See no reason why it isn't a good place for that sort of thing (the butcher's shop). A Spar turned into a country sports shop near here. Maybe the fish & chip van might like to upgrade to a shop?. You might point that out, if the gun stock maker hasn't done the deal yet. I can't have fish & chips no more, not even really for a treat.

I expect the withdrawal is in part the 'downturn' and in part 'indications' from the council.

Could the butcher-to-gunstockmaker reflect people's desire to eat free(ish) rabbits over butchers' meats? It's not too disastrous a loss, as there are some good online butchers (we had really wonderful ostritch mince fahitas for tea). If it was a green grocer, I'd be more worried.

The chippy van sounds a wonderful idea - a village probably can't support a shop, or only a shop that opens part of the week, but a van is another matter. I sympathise with [livejournal.com profile] didiusjulianus on the 'can not has' front. How are you with the Japanese equivalent: Image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8268197@N02/1428709675/)
I think the noodles in this case are buckwheat, and the tempura flour is (or should be) either rice flour or rice flour and cornstarch. Fish and chips from a Chippy it is not, but it is very nice! Price-wise and venue-wise, this was very comparable to a fish and chip restaurant.

I am scared of deep fat frying, but might be induced to try it for tempura.

Yes this might work. Might take effort given not living near Japanese restaurant (nor eating out much) and also for home making being rather anti deep fat drying (doubt we have ) and not very good with batter-making. But worth knowing, ta.

I am aching for fish and chips. I have located a shop that does not sell Chinese takeaway or kebabs, so am going to give their chips a try and if acceptable consider venturing on to the haddock.
