[livejournal.com profile] alitalf asked me about some of my interests.

1. Al Stewart is probably my favourite musical artist still performing. He is a folk-rock singer-songwriter, who has been performing for fifty years and recording for forty years. Born in Scotland, brought up in England, and living in the States, I saw him perform a couple of years ago, and hope to do so again later this year.

2. Beaujolais is not just a red wine I like - fresh, delicate, subtle, but also capable of aging well - but the region of rance where we spent our honeymoon.

3. Mathematics is what I studied at university. I actually went to do electronic engineering, but found I liked the maths better and was better at it, so I switched degrees, I now use a lot of maths in my work.

4. Miles Vorkosigan is the hero of a series of science fiction stories by Lois McMaster Bujold. He is a mutant dwarf, but more than makes up for this with his intellect, his energy, and the size of the chip on his shoulder.

5. Tigers are magnificent creatures. I would love to see one in the wild. They are also the nickname of the rugby union football club that I support.

6. Zuiko lenses are made to go with Olympus cameras - in my case, the OM series. For thirty year old kit, they are stupendously good optics.

(When Creatrix and I were choosing a new pair of binoculars last year, she took one look through a top-of-the-range pair, and said, "Now I know why you insist on good optics.")

ETA: And then [livejournal.com profile] sally_maria asked me about some of my interests:

1. Beau Brummell is the style icon; and, as I found out when Creatrix gave me his biography for my birthday, led a fascinating life to boot.

2. Edward Gorey is a cartoonist, whose cartoons have more than a touch of the macabre. Although his pictures look Edwardian, he only died recently.

3. Evora is the town in Portugal we visited before [livejournal.com profile] foradan and [livejournal.com profile] meglorien's wedding. The most complete medieval town I have ever seen, I think, and with substantial Roman remains as well.

4. PG Wodehouse is the comic writer par excellence, although some of his non-Jeeves, non-Blandings stories do leave me rather cold.

5. Real ale has more variety and interest than any other drink, not excuding claret or single malt.

6. (The) Royal Navy is what I wanted to join when I was at school, although I'm now rather glad I didn't get in. I'm still interested in it, though!

7. Thrud (the barbarian) is the eponymous hero of a comic strip in White Dwarf, in the days when it was still a magazine rather than a brochure. He now has his own, occasional, magazine.

I never knew you had wanted to study electronics.

Didn't they have to invent a whole new branch of maths for MPs expense fiddles?

I fully agree about the optics. Above even fairly modest numbers of megapixels, the lens becomes more important than the number of pixels - at least until you have a good lens!

That's why I got one with a Leica lens and fewer pixels, oh, and the big zoom. Failure to get close enough to far away things was always my big annoyance when trying to take heritage shots.

I'm glad I changed - I had / have no knack for it, whereas I do have a knack for maths.

Thank you very much - I've read enough novels set in the Regency to have some idea about who Brummel was, but some of the others I had no idea about.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iijklrtljnw) is what I think of when I hear the name Evora - I had no idea it was a town, but it sure sounds like one I need to go to :)

I had heard of the other, but only since I found out about the town. It really is a wonderful place to go and visit.

Oh I adore Gorey! Yet another thing we have in common.
