I'm so excited - in just over four weeks, we'll be going to Orkney!

We're flying up to Aberdeen by Easyjet, then sailing to Kirkwall by Northlink Ferries. (Queestion: does anyone have any ideas what to do in Aberdeen for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon?) The ferry gets in at 11pm, and so we're spending the first night in Kirkwall, here.

The next day, we're flying up to North Ronaldsay, where we're stopping at the bird observatory for two nights, then going onto Papa Westray for one more night.

After that, it's back to Mainland (ie the main island), where we pick up our hire car. We're spending seven nights at Woodwick House, which is the nicest hotel we have ever been to, run by a large white cat.

While on Orkney, we're hoping see some birds, some prehistoric dwellings, a bottle or two of whisky, and if we're very, very lucky, maybe even one of these.

I can't wait!!!

Have a good time! After seeing Shetland, I want to visit Orkney someday.

I'm sure we will! Shetland is worth seeing, but Orkney knocks it into a cocked hat, IMHO.

Strangely, I happen to have the Scotland Touring Guide by my computer... it looks like the Cathedral is closed on Saturdays, but the Gordon Highlanders museum (Viewfield Road), St Nicholas' Kirk (Union Street), the Maritime Museum (Shiprow), and the David Welch Winter Gardens (Polmuir Road) all sound interesting. I'm sure Google would oblige with more information on each.

That's great - many thanks!

So how many hotels have you been to run by large white cats?

Only one, but note the comma! The hotel we stopped at in Shetland was run by two cats and a dog, though.

Do you spend the trip saying "are we nearly there yet" too? ;)

Oh yes :-) (except that with sailing, the travelling is half the fun - okay, maybe not half the fun, because very little is anywere near as much fun as being on holiday in Orkney).
