How on earth do you answer the second question when the real answer is "in the first village outside the Greater London boundary which is also on the outskirts of a very small town/big village (Chigwell) and a quarter of a mile from a large (ex-Council) estate which is in a London borough? Plus our councils are Essex CC, and Epping Forest District, and we're in the Green Belt... but we're within the M25, walking distance of a tube station, and a TfL bus route."

Sounds as if you live very close to my Grandparents...

*g* drove past there yesterday. Grandad lives on The Lowe in Hainaut/Chigwell, and has done so since 1955ish.

Cambridge is a small city, but I work in the Fens and couldn't get there without a car...

Yes, but I can't drive the damn thing and would exist quite happily on the buses if I were left to myself! (We've just requested a quote for learner driver insurance... wheee!)

Bristol, but would be unable to get to/from work at unsociable hours if left to the unmitigated and largely useless chaos that is the city's public transportation network.

As an example, visiting my brother takes a trip of 20 minutes in the car or 2 hours (no exaggeration) by bus.

I also live in Brizzle, but I carefully chose my flat to be in walking distance of work to avoid the nightmares my colleagues tell about the buses.

I've filled out the poll, but as I live in the US, I may have contaminated your data.

Black country (large urban area just outside Birmingham). I could get to work without a car, but getting home again would be challenging. The last bus on the only really viable route leaves at about 5:20, I need to allow ten minutes to walk from work to the bus stop and on the week where I trialled using the bus it was ten minutes early on one day. Since my leaving time can vary from 4pm to after 6pm without prior knowledge using the car is the only option.

Other than that the buses in the area are great. It's just that route that sucks.

Missing option - there are two cars in our household but I can't drive. :-)

Day to day I get around on buses and my own two feet but I can usually get lifts when I need them.

I have a car. Philmophlegm has a car. Although it would be more difficult to live in our rural village without one, I think it would be just about possible if we both worked at fixed locations not far away. As we both need to travel at erratic times to various different places often at a considerable distance, cars are really the only option.

philmophlegm really likes cars and wouldn't want to be without one anyway. I quite enjoy driving too, but I think I could live without a car if I lived somewhere with good communications. That said, I suppose where and how we have ended up living and working is kind of based on the fact that we both drive. If one of us didn't, we'd probably have ended up living and working differently.

We only have a car now for those occasions when one can't do without one. Eg we hadn't used it for ages, but at the weekend we went to visit some old friends in a nearby town. 1/2-3/4 hour by car; practically impossible by bus.
