We have lots and lots and lots of ants in our conservatory - red ones and flying ones. For the time being, we've put down some of the ant powder I dug out of our garage - but any recommendations would be welcomed!

Try Raid - it works a treat. I used to live in a block of deck-access flats, and ant infestations were a common problem because the little blighters used to crawl up the conduits that carried the heating pipes and electricity cables. The standard procedure was to call the housing office and get them to send the ant man, who put down little bits of poisoned liver all round the house on pieces of tinfoil (no problem with this, as pets were not allowed in these flats). This treatment was pretty ineffective, so after a while I got fed up and bought a can of Raid. No more ants!

Thanks for that - if the problem persists, I'll get some.

We have fire ants here. Depending on your sensitivity, one bite can put you in hospital. There are three occasions only that I use poisons (I don't believe in them): wasp spray, fire ants, and Combat roach discs. Roaches are a problem here--well, also mosquitoes, also lots of bugs of all kinds. That's why there are screens on windows.
But, just for ordinary ants: draw a line with your finger across their passage. Really, that stops them. The ants (blind, you know) will wander off in confusion. If you just must use a chemical of some kind, a bit of Clorox bleach in a spray bottle will do the trick. Sticky paper will collect them, but it won't stop them unless you draw a line.

A friend of mine says a good way to get rid of them is to find where they are coming from, pour boiling water down the hole, then after a minute or so some ant powder, then cement over the hole, he guarantees me this works as long as they are actually nesting in the conservatory and not in the garden somewhere, but I've never seen it done so I'm not sure
