"There are over 50 historic pubs in Oxford. One of the most famous is the Eagle and Child, down the street from St. Anne’s, which is home to the place where Tolkien and J.K. Rowling frequently met to discuss their books."

And the Doctor used to drop them off after giving them lifts in the TARDIS, clearly ;)

Bright colored shirts, khakis, or shorts were immediate indications that they were American. One Brit even asked my friend, David Reid '09, who was also in England at the time, “Hey, where did you find those short trousers?”

Sarcasm is also a foreign concept, it seems, though that's possibly a good thing in this case. Still, at least he doesn't mention dentistry...

Also note that the illustration is of the Radcliffe Camera not the Bodleian.
What do you think these nice young people would have said if they had known that in my day the pub was familiarly known as the Fowl and Foetus?

On reflection I think some undergraduates may have been trying the good old game of seeing how much the Americans would swallow - in my day they did it to reporters, with the result that some very odd things appeared in the colour supps. I also knew a man who used to rush up to tourists and whisper "Are you genuine tourists? May I take your picture?"

Coming late to this, but I do like blogs by overseas visitors, particularly American students, for the wide-eyed innocence and real sense of discovery.

I doubt that Royal Birkdale would be too impressed to be described as a 'country club' either.

I thought it vaguely possible that the blogger meant that Tolkien & Rowling had visited the pub separately, in their own times. But, as far as I can tell, Rowling never spent time in Oxford (having gone to the University of Exeter). So really, REALLY.... it's an embarrassment. Especially since he's likely to go through life spouting "I attended Oxford" as some proof of his smarts.

Makes me want to weep! I am shamed by the boobies we send over to England for "education"! *sniff*

;)

Ranks right up there with VP candidate Joe Biden's remark that President Franklin Roosevelt went on television in 1929 to tell the American people that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Of course, the Democratic leaders are always sooooo much more intelligent than the Republican; we shouldnt be surprised by such displays of erudiion from the liberals'.
