As those of you who read my previous post will know, I can't read my friends' pages at work (although I can read / post to my own; odd, that). We're using a nearby hotel to skim other pages and email, but I'm sure we're not catching everything. So - if there's anything happening in your life right now that you would like to share, please put it in a comment. Hey, even if there's nothing happening in your life, please put it in a comment! :-)

It must be some particular firewall software. For what it is worth, I could not see mine or other people's friends list from work (Civil Service) though I could see individual's pages, and post or comment. (Could not access my e-mail account, either.)

I'm sure you are right; I may look into this at some point, but am not inclined to do so at the moment.

Probably not the best start to a new job...

I just played a duet with Peter as part of his GCSE music - very unnerving, when you know a third of his marks depend on it. Even that wasn't as unnerving as getting out of the car-park afterwards!
I'm going to Bath to see my daughter some time at the end of April, and wondered if we could arrange to meet for a drink when you finish work perhaps?

If you have friends or communities that have the 'adult' flag checked then that might explain it...

I have no news but hope you are liking Bristol.

You may be right.

Bristol is okay so far, thanks; although it only takes me seven minutes or so to walk to work, we are living in a quiet road, with fields only a very few minutes in the other direction.

I changed the car for a larger, newer one. I think this is exciting only to me :)

Well, they just called to say I didn't get it. Not too dissapointed as there were downsides to this job, but its still a little dispiriting.

Just received an e-mail from the BFI TV Classics people with guidelines about assembling a proposal for the Yes, Minister manuscript. I take this as an encouraging sign that they didn't just tell me to go away and stop wasting their time!

More definite plans to go to Orkney are happening in my life! We're working out whether to go in late August (I'd really like to go away for my birthday) or wait until September. I'm guessing Orkney is not the sort of destination that's overrun by kids even in the summer holidays - or is that too optimistic?

Also, the bus service appears to be pretty vestigial. What are the taxis like?

Scottish school holidays are different to English ones, I think, from trying to keep track of my niece's availability, many years ago. More like June-July than July-August.

Despite Orkeney's inability to spot Jason's brilliance, I still know two people who live there .... I could ask.

Oh yes - I see Google shows that Orkney schools go back on 18 August. That's useful. I don't know how many hordes of English/other foreigns cart their spawn around the place in late summer though - any information appreciated.

No, not too many kids! There are actually a moderate number, because once you're there it is a very child-friendly place; but I've never felt overrun.

We've always hired a car, so I can't speak of the bus service from first-hand experience. It seems to be pretty reasonable from Kirkwall (and to a lesser extent from Stromness), but poor from anywhere else (unless, of course, you want to go to Kirkwall or Stromness).

The twice we took taxis, they were easy to get hold of and had low fares per mile, but distances are fairly high so the fares do add up.

Your best bet might be to stop in Kirkwall and take busses where possible.

Thanks. We are now booked into self-catering just outside Kirkwall from 24 August to 1 September!

That would be very handy, thanks - if there's a chance to hand them over at some point. If not I can probably get stuff out of the library.

I shall bear them in mind in case we do see each other; if not, I can post them up until a few days before you go. But yes, you could get most of it from the library.

I have back ache. I have today seen a Chropractor, who for £55 told me in great detail what was wrong, and manipulated me, and a locum GP, who for probably about the same in taxes told me in much less detail what was wrong, and prescribed diclofenac cream and the chiropractor. Or rather, didn't prescribe the chiropractor: him, I'm going to have to continue paying.

I had to go to the doctor today. I really didn't want to take time and money getting the bus to town but it was a lovely day so I did some short walks during the trip, and this doctor is a new one and was very nice and helpful. Car issues are ongoing, all systems go on the ballet front, The Teen's violin playing seems to be getting worse not better, and my shoulder is now playing up again.

Thanks for the update - I'm pleased the doctor was helpful, and good luck for the ballet / violin.

Still alive, haven't been posting, have had a friend to stay for the weekend, been productive, have you had any takers for those suits or would you like me to email you my brother's address?

Hope all is going well!

No, no takers for the suits (although a possible taker for the waistcoats) - if you want to send me your brother's address (and maybe let him know), I'll get in touch with him.
