Yes, I do see what you mean. (And while ice houses were available in pre-technological days, they probably didn't stretch as far back as the middle ages).

I was surprised to see an ice box in "Singin' in the Rain", set in ?1929. And a dish-washer in "The Birds", in ?1959.

It depends what you mean by "back then". There was both a medieval warm period, and a little ice age!

The Roman vineyard in Lincoln is still there. The most extreme vineyard in the world is in County Durham.
