They look like they are designed for quite different functions from what I can see? Or is that just my monitor?

They are, rather; and part of the problem is that I'm not quite sure what function I want it to fulfil (or, want it to fulfil several different functions).

I've got a Paul Smith jacket that's not dissimilar to the Boden one.

Depends. What functionality are you looking for? If you want something that looks smart but will be as cool as possible in hot weather, then neither - the main material of the Boden one is nicer but its the *lining* you really need to think about. Your best bet is to try to find something either unlined (will obv then have a different look, though) or lined in 100% cotton *including the sleeves* (which is often what lets my own search down.) Of course, if that's not what concerns you, ignore the above ;-)

(I'm really at skip=580, but briefly looked at front page...)

Thank you for that very helpful advice, Polly.

(How are you all getting on, BTW?)

I like the look of the Boden one, and like the sound of silk linen fabric - but jackets are difficult to assess online... If not sure I'd recommend ordering both (maybe in a couple of sizes/colours) and sending back the one(s) you don't like.

If in doubt re sizing/cut, you can always get it altered by a tailor. This is what [livejournal.com profile] lanciatore did - to my mind it was worth every penny just for the tailor's comment on his vital statistics... which I'm not allowed to post online :-(

Being not a fan of either overpriced or impractical items (I count linen which creases and is presumably tricky to clean?, but not that travel linen stuff which sounds potentially very clever, in this) I'd say definitely the Rohan one.

I also don't like the colour and cut of the Boden one either. Although I am familiar with Boden and know their clothes are of good quality etc. As are Rohan's though.

I think the Rohan one in either colour would also look better on YOU specifically.
