Few thought he was even a starter.
There were many who thought themselves smarter.
But he ended PM,
CH and OM,
An earl and a Knight of the Garter

One of the lasting impressions I received from watching the BBC's 1964 general election coverage was the oddity of seeing Attlee pop up to comment on the election result. It made me realise how much he is an historical figure to me - he died three years before I was born - whereas Harold Wilson and Alec Douglas-Home, the main antagonists in that election, aren't, and nor are the various members of the political commentariat who turn up then as today, even if Anthony Howard looked absurdly young back then (for the reason that he was) and David Dimbleby was a hapless youth out on location, trying to be professional in the face of indulgent remarks from his father anchoring in the studio.

I've always been an admirer of Mr Attlee, and if I could time travel I would love to go back to the 1945 election and be aprt of the new administration. Difficult times, but such great names, such idealism, and working to create the NHS. Wow.

(Two ts, surely? I could be Rong...)

Yes indeed; it was just a typo on my part.

This reminds me that I need to read a decent biography of Attlee, after wading through the hagiography that Francis Beckett wrote a few years ago. (I read it for Political Studies Review, and was probably too harsh in my published comments, but Politico's really dropped the ball when they picked this volume for their Great Statesmen series.)
