I know something of Byzantine art and, unsurprisingly, I know something of Tolkien. The images might be eye-catching, but to me they don't feel right at all.
I once saw a Russian edition of LOTR full of illustrations in the style of 'let's turn all the characters into medieval saints'. The pictures were quite pretty and colourful, but didn't feel right either. >_>
Not sure what Tolkien would have made of such things...
